Sod
Standard sod pieces are about 16 × 24 in or 2 × 5 ft (10 sq ft); a pallet typically covers 400–500 sq ft depending on the farm. Add about 5% for cutting around beds and curves.
Example: 2,000 sq ft + 5% = 2,100 sq ft → 210 pieces, or 5 pallets at 450 sq ft.
Grass seed rates
Seeding rates vary a lot by species. Typical new-lawn rates per 1,000 sq ft: tall fescue about 6–8 lb, Kentucky bluegrass 2–3 lb, perennial ryegrass 5–10 lb, bermudagrass (hulled) 1–2 lb. Overseeding uses roughly half. Follow the rate on the seed bag.
Timing
Cool-season grasses establish best in early fall; warm-season grasses in late spring to early summer. Keep new sod or seed consistently moist for the first 2–3 weeks.
It uses the standard formula shown on this page and rounds bags, boxes and pieces up to whole units. Product sizes vary by brand, so confirm with the label or your supplier before you buy.
Should I buy extra material?
Yes. A 5–10% allowance covers cuts, spills and uneven surfaces; running short mid-job usually costs more than a few leftovers.
