How many pavers?
Pavers per square foot = 144 ÷ (paver length × width in inches). A standard 4 × 8 in brick paver is 4.5 per sq ft. Add 5–10% for cuts, more for curves or herringbone patterns.
Example: 200 sq ft of 4 × 8 pavers: 200 × 4.5 = 900, plus 10% = 990 pavers. A 4 in base is 200 × 4 ÷ 12 ÷ 27 = 2.47 cu yd of gravel; 1 in sand = 0.62 cu yd.
Base layers
Walkways and patios: about 4–6 in of compacted crushed stone base
Driveways: 8–12 in base depending on soil
About 1 in of coarse concrete sand for bedding, screeded flat
Compact the base in 2 in lifts, slope about 1/4 in per foot away from buildings, and finish with polymeric sand in the joints.
It uses the standard formula shown on this page and rounds bags, boxes and pieces up to whole units. Product sizes vary by brand, so confirm with the label or your supplier before you buy.
Should I buy extra material?
Yes. A 5–10% allowance covers cuts, spills and uneven surfaces; running short mid-job usually costs more than a few leftovers.
